Research resources available to all online

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, many publishers and content aggregators have made extra content free online. SCOLMA has put together the collection of resources below to help researchers, academics, students and librarians navigate what’s out there. As far as we are aware, the resources below are available internationally and therefore may be of interest to African colleagues.

The list below gives a selection of resources which you may want to explore. It covers general content, African Studies resources and specialist information on Covid-19.

If you are an academic institution, it is worth contacting relevant major publishers and content aggregators, as many may offer extended free trial access during this difficult period.

General and specialist resources

• Latest issue of the SCOLMA journal ARD SCOLMA African Research No.136 Web
• A list of publishers who have chosen to temporarily make electronic content freely available on Project MUSE.
• Resources to support libraries and educators impacted by COVID-19 access provided by Gale.  The password for all is “open”.
• Covid-19 Resources for Academics and Students – Free access to entire Wits University Press eBook collection in university libraries.
• JSTOR resources during COVID-19 for participating academic institutions and secondary schools, as well as expanded free access for everyone to: 26 journal archives in Public Health ; 6,000+ selected journal articles related to COVID-19 ; & free read-online access has expanded from six to 100 articles per month.
• Information and Resources to Help During the COVID-19 Pandemic – resources from EBSCO and partners for academic institutions, researchers, and secondary schools.
• BibliU COVID-19 statement and free access offer.
• EDP Sciences Journals To support all researchers during the Covid-19 pandemic, EDP Sciences has opened the journals content on our site from 2018-2020 so it is freely available for all to read.
• EQUINOX and COVID-19 –  EQUINOX publishers are providing free access to the last 12 months of journal issues to all.
• SIAM Epidemiology Collection (Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics)
  The SIAM Epidemiology Collection has been made freely available in response to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and the associated disease COVID-19.
• SAGE Journals – Free medical, social, and behavioral science articles, including their “Most Recent Covid-19 Articles” collection.
• Springer Nature are providing free access to textbooks across a range of fields.
• The US Center for Research Libraries has made more of its historical collections freely available.

Keeping up to date with coronavirus in Africa

• Columbia University has compiled a list of “COVID-19 in Africa” electronic resources as part of their African Studies WWW-VIrtual Library
• AfricaFocus Bulletin has extensive links to the latest news and analysis.

Archival collections and content

• Livingstone Online: illuminating imperial exploration.
