Conover-Porter Award presented to Terry Barringer

Congratulations to Terry Barringer, long-time member of SCOLMA and editor of African Research and Documentation, on being awarded the Conover-Porter Award by the African Studies Association for editing Africa Bibliography. The award is presented every two years to recognise outstanding achievement in Africana bibliography and reference tools. Africa Bibliography, published by Cambridge University Press under the auspices of the International African Institute, records the previous year’s publications in a wide range of material from all regions of Africa, in English and other languages. http://www.internationalafricaninstitute.org/

Film Africa 2014 begins on 31 October

Film Africa 2014, the Royal African Society’s annual festival celebrating the best of African cinema, begins on 31 October and runs until 9 November. 85 films from 23 African countries will be screened at venues in central London, including thrillers, historical dramas, documentaries and short films, with particular strands marking the 20th anniversary of democracy in South Africa and the 60th anniversary of the Algerian revolution. The festival includes director Q&As, masterclasses, school screenings and family events.
