PhD Scholarship in African Studies at the University of Birmingham

African Studies PhD Scholarship (Arabic Sources for West African History, West African Manuscripts in the British Library)

The Department of African Studies and Anthropology at the University of Birmingham
(incorporating the Centre of West African Studies) and the British Library are pleased
to announce a three-year scholarship for students commencing their MPhil/PhD in
African Studies in September 2013. The scholarship is attached to an AHRC funded
Collaborative Doctoral Partnership awarded to the British Library for research and
cataloguing related to its collection of West African Arabic manuscripts and its
forthcoming exhibition: ‘West Africa: Cultures of the Word’.

 Archbishop Desmond Tutu  will speak at the Templeton Prize Forum, Monday May 20th, 4.30pm at The Greenwood Theatre, King’s College London, 55 Weston Street, London SE1

PhD scholarship on South African political ephemera and propaganda


The University of SheffieldTHE BRITISH LIBRARY

Applications are invited for a University of Sheffield and British
Library PhD scholarship: Freedom, Oppression and Resistance: Evolving
Stories in South African Political Ephemera and Propaganda, 1948- 2004.
The project will work with the British Library's collections of
political ephemera, to examine the evolving nature of political
participation within contested public spheres in South Africa.

The studentship will be supervised by Dr Daniel Hammett and Professor
Charles Pattie at University of Sheffield and Ian Cooke at the British

Applications and enquiries are welcome from interested applicants with a
first class or upper second class first degree in a relevant subject
area and who hold or expect to complete a Masters level degree before
