Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, chairperson of the African Union Commission<\/strong><\/span> Date & Time:\u00a0<\/strong>Tuesday, 18 June 2013, 5.45-8:00PM<\/span> This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU), established on 25 May 1963 with a mandate to promote unity, solidarity, and cooperation among African states and to provide a better quality of life for the people of Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2002, the OAU was re-launched as the African Union (AU), embodying a renewed agenda of pan-Africanism and African renaissance in the 21st century.<\/span><\/p>\n Despite previously being dubbed \u201ca trade union of tyrants\u201d the OAU and AU have been historically effective in achieving key strategic aims. From combating colonialism in the 20th century to its current political and military role in mitigating conflict in the DRC, Mali and Somalia, there is evidence of the AU\u2019s developing leadership role on continental affairs as a champion of African solutions to African problems.<\/span><\/p>\n HE Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma\u2019s lecture will reflect on past achievements and challenges of the AU and look ahead to the next 50 years.<\/span><\/p>\n Attendance to this event for non-members is subject to availability.
