British Library for Development Studies (BLDS)

British Library for Development Studies

The BLDS collection, built up since 1966, contains material relating to all aspects of economic and social development across the whole of Africa, to support postgraduate and other original research. A large proportion of the holdings are published in Africa. Subjects are wide ranging, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of development studies, and the collection is kept up to date to reflect current concerns and emerging agendas.

Sources of material include developing country and donor governments, international and regional organizations, NGOs, research institutions, and commercial publishers.
Holdings are especially strong for Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa, with the systematic collection of core government statistics for each country, plus government policy documents and an extensive collection of indigenous and non-indigenous journals, a wide range of monographs and other research output, both indigenous and non-indigenous, plus key reference works. Holdings on Lusophone and Francophone Sub Saharan Africa follow a similar pattern, but with a less extensive collection. The collection on North Africa covers mainly core Government statistics for each country, along with monographs reflecting the current development agenda and research.

Approximately 25 journals published in Africa are indexed, and these individual article records are searchable in the catalogue

Additionally BLDS hosts the BLDS Digital Library, a repository of full text research publications from developing countries, many based in Africa.
